Toni Onley

Toni Onley was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, England, son of James and Florence (Lord) Onley. He came to Canada in 1948 and settled for a time at Brantford, Ontario. He studied mural painting with fresco and vinylite mediums and was very much influenced by his American teacher, James Pinto whose abstract impressionistic paintings set Onley on a new direction of non-objective work. Although a prolific artist he has been a careful craftsman whether working with paintings large or small, or with serigraphs, etchings and drawings. His silkscreen prints and drawings have received high praise and his paintings, articulate, simple, and subtle in colouring have been discussed by most of the leading critics and historians of the day. Collections include: Tate Gallery, London, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Museum of Modern Art, NYC, Seattle Museum of Fine Arts, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., Vancouver Art Gallery, U.B.C. (Brock Hall Coll.), Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Simon Fraser University, Winnipeg Art Gallery, London Public Library & Art Museum, Willistead Gallery, Windsor, York University, Ontario Art Gallery, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University, Kingston, National Gallery of Canada, Musee d'Art Contemporain, Montreal, Sir George Williams Univ., Montreal, Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, Confederation Centre, P.E.I., Memorial University, St. John's Nfld.
