Desiree Bond

Born in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Desiree Bond enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and moved many times before finally settling in Victoria where she has raised her family and continues to paint. Her focus is to achieve a fresh and effortless feel to her work. She frequently experiments with different mediums, subject matter and points of view. In the last few years Desiree has spent time painting en plein air where the west coast of Vancouver Island provides her with endless inspiration. In her own words, Desiree describes why she became hooked “en plein air” painting. “Like many artists, spending a lot of time alone in my studio, those same walls, and lots of bare canvases can create a felling of dread. A friend suggested changing my process and paint outdoors, on location. As valuable as that solitary imaginative work is, I am crazy about plein air painting and am a regular with a local Victoria group the “Al Frescoes”. It amazes me just how fascinating I find en plein air, and how much I have learned in these few years. I love the process. The challenge of getting on site with just a few supplies, then hoping it wonʼt rain, which on Vancouver Island can be tricky. You have to try to decide quickly what to paint, with so many choices. What I really enjoy is when we meet at noon, by then most of us have a somewhat completed painting. There is a kind of group show as we chat and have lunch. I have learned so much just standing around and seeing how other artist interpret the same scene. I am amazed at the different choices and unique perspectives each artist has. It is often the best part of my day.”
